40 years ago: Land-clearing begins for Clinton Dam project

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 6, 1972:

Tree removal and other land clearing activities were scheduled to begin in the next week to ten days at the site of the Clinton Reservoir dam embankment. C. E. Clark Jr., president of List and Clark Construction Co. of Overland Park, had been awarded the $14,299,171 contract by the Corps of Engineers on July 13 to build the dam and spillway for Clinton. A Mound City company had been subcontracted to do the land-clearing on the approximately 600 acres in the area; peak employment for that work was expected to be about 150 people, 95 percent of whom would be hired locally — mostly through union halls, Clark said. Construction on the dam and spillway was expected to take about three and one-half years.
