From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 4, 1987:

• It was reported today that Larry S. Flannery Sr., president of Weaver’s Department Store, had died on the previous evening after a sudden illness. Flannery, 73, had been in New York in a buying trip with his son, Joseph, then executive vice president of the Lawrence firm. Roger Quakenbush, speaking for the Weaver’s staff, said, “This comes as a tremendous shock to all of us.” After his service in the Navy during World War II, Flannery had been manager at Weaver’s for A. B. Weaver from 1950 until 1962, when the store had been sold to a corporation and Flannery had been chosen president and manager..
• Lawrence residents had been happy to greet showers that had moved through the area at about 5 p.m. the previous evening. The thundershowers had been the first rain in Lawrence since July 18, when the area had picked up .25 of an inch.
