2nd District race heats up among Democrats

August 3, 2012

The contest for the Democratic nomination in the state’s 2nd Congressional District got a little hotter on Friday.

Robert Eye, a Lawrence attorney, issued a recorded telephone message to voters, criticizing his opponent Tobias Schlingensiepen, a pastor from Topeka.

Eye, Schlingensiepen and Ottawa farmer Scott Barnhart are running in Tuesday’s primary for the Democratic nod to take on U.S. Rep. Lynn Jenkins, R-Topeka, who is seeking her third term.

Eye’s recorded message asks, “Who is my opponent, Tobias Schlingensiepen? For all we know, he is just another Lynn Jenkins.”

Eye continues, “When asked to debate, he said he was too busy.”

Eye added that voters don’t know where Schlingensiepen stands on the issues.

Schlingensiepen dismissed Eye’s effort as “a last-minute game of gotcha, and that’s what the voters are tired of. I’m preparing to fight a winning campaign against Lynn Jenkins.”

Schlingensiepen added, “The real facts are that we have vigorously debated numerous times. If you want to see one of the debates, all you have to do is go to the Lawrence Journal-World website.”

Schlingensiepen was referring to a Lawrence candidate forum that the three candidates participated in sponsored by the Voter Education Coalition and 6News. Video of the forum is posted on the Journal-World website.

Eye said forums where the candidates have appeared didn’t have interaction between the candidates.

Kevin Yoder /Lynn Jenkins just voted to extend the Bush tax cuts.

We need to speak out now to ensure the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest 2% are allowed to expire as scheduled at the end of the year.

Representative Kevin Yoder, 202 225-2865 Representaive Lynn Jenkins 202 225 6601

After more than a decade, it's clear that Bush tax cuts for the rich are a massive -- and very costly -- failure.

Rep Kevin Yoder, 202-225-2865 Rep Lynn Jenkins 202 225 6601

I am extremely dismayed that Rep Yoder and Rep Jenkins voted to extend the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy.

When we're brutally slashing the budget for government programs that help people, there's nothing more fiscally irresponsible than giving money to millionaires and billionaires who literally don't need it.

Rep Kevin Yoder, 202-225-2865 Rep Lynn Jenkins 202 225 6601

The very same politicians who are pleading poverty and yelling the loudest about the need to make brutal budget cuts had no problem voting to give away more tax breaks to the rich and the ultra-rich.

There is very little that so clearly demonstrates what's broken in Congress than those simultaneously demanding to give the Koch brothers a tax cut while pushing benefit cuts to programs like Social Security and Medicare.

Merrill: As usual, you know not what you talk about! If you simply take more from ANYONE, rich or poor, this adminisration will simply continue to throw it down the drain. The rich already pay more taxes than what you would ever dream about. Those numbers are so far above your head, you could never reach them in a million years.

So one must assume that if the "Bush" tax cuts are allowed to expire the new rates will be called the "Obama" tax increases? Can't we all just get along.....

The only help we need is the government out of our lives. It still amazes me how people want to throw away their freedom when others will risk death to get what we have. Think about what you wrote here. Please!

The guy running Bob Eye's campaign is Chad Manspeaker. He is a union goon that serves on the Topeka City Council. He was the mastermind behind Nancy Boyda's one hit wonder! Stick to ruining Topeka, Lawrence is just fine with Congresswoman Jenkins.

I will vote for a candidate that did not hold up progress and cause a raise in the price of the construction of the Southern Bypass for hundreds of millions of dollars and for 20+ years! I really would like to know just what Mr Eye's hidden agenda really is. Maybe it's for more delays. Voters of Lawrence want a by-pass without any more delays.

Tobias is by far has the best chance to beat Jenkins in the fall. He's been running a solid Boyda-like grassroots campaign in ALL the District (which goes from Oklahome to Nebraska. He can also carry Shawnee County, key to defeating Jenkins. He even got the endorsement of the KC Star as the candidate most likely to defeat Jenkins, as well as endorsements from a host of other high level KS Dems. That includes Joyce allegrucci, Sebelius' former Chief of Staff. Eye has none. That should tell you something about electability.

Kind of hard to get republican votes when you tried to force one to resign in January and Boyda was a very popular incumbent who grew up in the area and had a popular husband and she still got beat 51-46% by Jenkins and Tobias is no Nancy Boyda. As far as the star and all the other endorsements that just paints them more into a corner. If your a tradition democrat in Kansas your in trouble they couldn't even field candidates in two other districts.

Why bother to contact any of the right wing extremists who currently occupy one of the state's congressionl offices? They would either 1) ignore you 2) reply with extremist talking points about why the wealthy are "job creators" and really need their tax breaks or 3) plead ignorance as to what the heck you're talkng about. Time is better spent working for or contributing to a candidate who will support the president's efforts to reinvigorate the economy, maintain our social security and medicare rights and resist the efforts of the Republican Red Guard (tea partiers) to destroy the social and economic fabric of our country.

A four year degree is not quite enough. Having two or three sources of income is not a bad idea. Why? There are at least 6 reasons to keep in mind.

  1. Mergers
  2. Hostile Takeovers
  3. Leveraged Buyouts
  4. Free Trade Agreements
  5. Reagan/Bush Savings and Loan home loan scandal which killed the economy and cost the USA millions of jobs.
  6. Bush/Cheney Home Loan scandal killed the economy and cost the USA millions of jobs

All of above Republican economics ultimately translate into millions upon millions upon millions of USA job losses. Big time layoffs are the end result. These jobs go abroad with tax codes that prevent taxation on profits made abroad from USA big name corporations.

There was a time when becoming employed by corporate America came with long term employment, fine wages and dependable retirement benefits. Those days are gone.

Eye for the People

Real people, who need real solutions to meet real needs, NEED Bob Eye in Congress.

Bob believes in meaningful Economic Development.

We must develop a robust regional economic base by Investing in safe, reliable and efficient infrastructure that meets the needs of a growing and changing population. In addition to encouraging a revival of our domestic manufacturing and service industries.

Reducing the student loan debt burden is definitely one key to get the economy moving.

Bob believes that all people should have access to Jobs and Opportunity.

We must stimulate job market growth by:

Creating an entrepreneurial culture that enables and encourages small business ownership. /

Using opportunities for regional infrastructure improvement to employ Kansans. /

Moving away from a world of crony capitalism, corporatism and decision-making that benefits only the wealthy. /

Bob believes in defending and protecting our Civil Liberties, Constitutional Rights and Responsibilities.

He will work to ensure that our government serves our needs without intruding into our private lives.

Bob believes in Environmental Protection & Resource Conservation which is healthy for our wallets.

Bob will champion reasoned environmental protection and responsible conservation efforts, protecting public health and our natural resources.

Which includes ensuring the availability of safe, clean water supplies, as well as mineral and renewable energy sources for ours and future generations by fostering the development of domestic and locally-produced energy.

In addition to placing importance upon the best and highest use of our natural resources.

Plus capitalizing on Kansas’ potential to be the world leader in wind energy production.

Furthermore ending taxpayer funded fossil fuel subsidies will be great for the environment.

Bob is a prefectly good person and has done a lot of good work, but is Unelectable in the 2nd District vs Jenkins. His extreme environmental record is a negative in most areas outside Dg Co A ND many Lawrence voters think the last 5 years of litigation was expensive to taxpayers and only profited his law firm. Sorry, but tthose are the facts from over 500 voters (Dems and Unaffiliated).

Agreed, but someone has to be out stumping for votes and making organizational contacts. Once again, a good man, A good debater, but not electable. Needs more moderation and the race does not to be a drive to the left, like the Repubs were driven to the ultra Right.

Bob Eye will get his hat handed to him in the general election. He is a progressive environmental attorney whose left of Obama. He and his treasurer have had numerous lawsuits against the State of Kansas and that will not sit well with the small town folks in the district. He will not pull the independents and no republican will vote for him. Same with Tobias, he tried to force O'Neal to resign over his email in January, then goes out and says you know what at the Lawrence Forum. Now they are squabbling over petty stuff, neither of these two guys can beat Jenkins and her campaign stash. They will lose 70-30 and 60-40.
