Familiar faces hit ‘Runway’

Familiar faces arrive as stern taskmasters on “Project Runway” (8 p.m., Lifetime). The contestants are dragooned into whipping up outfits for the upcoming Primetime Emmy Awards. And these outfits are to be worn by designers who have appeared on “Project Runway” during past seasons. It’s like a case of the upperclassmen hazing the incoming freshmen.

Krysten Ritter, who plays the evil little fashion plate from ABC’s “Don’t Trust the B– in Apt. 23,” arrives as a guest judge and joins regulars Heidi Klum, Michael Kors and Nina Garcia.

• TCM spends the entire day airing the films of Myrna Loy (1905-93), an urbane and witty comic actress who could more than hold her own in serious drama.

While some extol Cary Grant’s screwball comedies with Katharine Hepburn, I believe his pairing with Myrna Loy brought out a more restrained and ultimately better performance. Grant is at his awkward best in the 1947 comedy “The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer” (3:15 p.m.), where his interest in Loy is complicated by the romantic advances of her precocious little sister (Shirley Temple). (For the record, adolescent girls were called “bobby soxers” before the term “teenager” gained popularity in the 1950s.)

Loy’s versatility can be seen in “The Best Years of Our Lives” (7 p.m.), an epic 1946 drama about the difficult adjustment of soldiers returning to civilian life after World War II. And no Myrna Loy marathon would be complete without the 1934 comedy “The Thin Man” (10 p.m.), co-starring William Powell, in which two sophisticated Manhattanites become amateur detectives while guzzling an astounding number of cocktails.
