People looking to beat the heat will have to stick with swimming outside for the next few weeks.
The Lawrence Indoor Aquatic Center at 4706 Overland Drive, will be closed through Aug. 19, for annual maintenance.
The Outdoor Aquatic Center, 727 Ky., will stay open, with its regular public swimming hours of 1 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. except on Aug. 16-17, when it will be open from 4 p.m. to 8:45 p.m.
All monthly and annual pass holders will receive 19 free days added to their passes, to make up for the shutdown, city officials said.
For more information on the pools, call the Lawrence Aquatic Division office, 832-7946.

Just regular maintenance. They do this at about this time every year.

Did you not read the article? It plainly stated why the indoor pool is being closed.

I know. Let's shut down during the busiest and hottest time of the year instead of waiting until fall or early spring or even the middle of winter. That makes good business sense, right?

Umm..it is the INDOOR aquatic center being closed for maintenance. Yes, it does make good business sense because why would you close it for maintenance during fall, spring, or winter if the outdoor pool is also closed ?

Because competitive swim season is fall, winter and spring.

why do it now, they should have just waited until the kids go back to school on the 15th, when there is little demand for it

Regardless of their reasoning, they should not close down during the busiest time of the year. It shows a lack of consideration for their patrons, the taxpayers.

Every time I go there, there's frickin' swim meet going on anyway. The deep side is hardly "public," in my opinion.

I would imagine that the maintenance is scheduled for this time of year in order to prepare for the start of the upcoming school year.
