25 years ago: Centenarian Alf Landon to receive presidential birthday visit
From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 1, 1987
- Citing schedule conflicts, President Ronald Reagan had turned down an invitation to deliver a lecture at Kansas State University on the 100th birthday of former Kansas Gov. Alf M. Landon. However, the president was planning to visit Landon at his Topeka home a few days earlier. Landon was delighted that the president was planning to call on him, saying, “It is a distinct honor to have the president to go to the trouble to come see me on my birthday.”
- It was hot in Lawrence, but not really hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk, as proven by some residents of Vermont Towers who had gathered outside for just such an experiment. Although a local bank sign said that the temperature was 99 degrees, the egg remained raw after having been broken on the sidewalk.
- Some residents near the Clinton Dam were calling the Douglas County sheriff’s office this week to complain that members of the “Kansas” production crew were driving recklessly. Callers also said that the film crew had been blocking the road below the dam for too long.
