A Douglas County judge Monday sentenced a 38-year-old Lawrence man to serve eight years in prison for convictions in three cases, including indecent solicitation of a minor.

Timothy L. Turner had pleaded guilty earlier this month to the solicitation charge for a sexual encounter Sept. 9 with a 15-year-old girl at a house in south-central Lawrence. At a November preliminary hearing the girl testified she had snuck out of a women’s shelter with a friend and met Turner when she got into a car driven by another man they met in downtown Lawrence.

Defense attorney Branden Smith said Monday in court Turner accepted responsibility for his part in the crimes and in the solicitation case, Turner was unaware the victim was younger than 18 until police questioned him. That assertion was at odds with the girl’s testimony in November in which she said she told Turner she was 15.

Turner’s eight-year prison sentence also includes time for two other convictions, one a 2010 marijuana possession conviction and a 2010 property crime conviction.

On top of the eight-year prison sentence, Pokorny ordered Timothy L. Turner to serve eight more months in the Douglas County Jail for violating his probation in a 2009 misdemeanor case. Turner also will be required to register as a sex offender for 25 years for the solicitation conviction, Pokorny said.

Franklin County Attorney Heather Jones, who was a special prosecutor in the case, said the plea agreement in the case was appropriate because the sentences in four cases will run consecutive to one another.
