Around and About for April 28, 2012

Six Washburn University students from Douglas County recently won scholarships from the Washburn School of Business: Michael Lisher, of Lawrence, won the Arthur Schultz Banking and Finance Scholarship; Alicia Potter, of Lawrence, won the Dale Marcoux Scholarship; Ben Reynoldson, of Lawrence, won the Dale Marcoux Scholarship; Keegan Russell, of Lawrence, won the Arthur Schultz Banking and Finance Scholarship; and Mark Stancliffe, of Lecompton, won the Fidelity State Bank and Trust/Mr. and Mrs. Anderson Chandler Business Scholarship.

Jill (Richardson) and Rob Aldredge of Durham, N.C., announce the birth of their daughter, Wren Elizabeth, on Feb. 8, 2012, in Durham. Maternal grandparents are Janice Richardson, of Lawrence, and Mike Richardson of Marshall, Ark. Paternal grandparents are Jenny and Gordon Jackson, of Vandalia, Ohio, and Joseph Aldredge, of Dayton, Ohio.

Emma Pogge will celebrate her 100th birthday with a party from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Lawrence Free Methodist Church. Friends are invited to stop by and visit with her.

The University Women’s Club announced three scholarship winners from this area for 2012-13 at its luncheon April 5. Scholarships are going to Laurissa Beckman, Abby Campbell and Laura Dean.

Beckman, of Louisburg, is an aspiring public health nurse and is applying to Kansas University’s School of Nursing. She has completed her Certified Nursing Assistant certification.

Abby Campbell, of Lawrence, is a graduate student in psychology and aspires to counsel troubled college students and military veterans. She will be traveling to Kenya this summer to work on her dissertation.

Laura Dean, of Lawrence, is a graduate student in political science and law. She is interested in the problem of human trafficking. She plans to study in the Ukraine this year.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln undergraduate students were honored in conjunction with UNL’s All-University Honors Convocation April 22 at the Lied Center for Performing Arts. “High” scholars are in the top 10 percent of their class. High scholars from this area include James Austin Epp, Bonner Springs freshman, College of Journalism and Mass Communications; Monica Elizabeth Sorensen, Bonner Springs junior, College of Business Administration; and Megan Nicole Fleming, Lawrence freshman, College of Fine and Performing Arts.

Ryan and Jill Adams, of Lakewood, Colo., announce the birth of twins, Emmy Kay Adams and Everett Charles Adams, on March 13, 2012. The twins were born at Lutheran Hospital in Wheatridge, Colo. They join big sister Harper Adams, who is 3. Grandparents are John and Janet Adams, of Lawrence, and Chuck and Cindy Wright, Madison Lake, Minn.

Washburn University student Grace Hildenbrand, of Lawrence, was one of five students recently inducted into Lambda Pi Eta, the national honor society for undergraduates in communication. She is a member of Phi Kappa Phi national honor society and is a member of the Top Hat Chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta. She is a senior and is pursuing a degree in communication, with an emphasis in corporate communication.
