40 years ago: County government determined to make switch to computerization

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 30, 1972:

Douglas County commissioners and officials had just returned from a quick trip to Reno County to view their computerized bookkeeping system. County officials were now “soundly convinced” that Douglas County would have to make the switch from hand-computed tax rolls to data processing in the near future. Commissioners had been considering going to a computer system for at least three years now and had been taking steps toward that goal, although no deadline or time schedule had been set. Commission Chairman Arthur Heck said that the county did not intend to purchase a computer but was planning to purchase computer time from one of several available systems in the Lawrence area.
