— A Wichita man has been sentenced to life plus 14 years in prison for raping his 10-year-old stepdaughter and setting her on fire.

The Wichita Eagle reports 31-year-old Chris Newberry has been undergoing psychiatric treatment at Larned State Hospital since pleading guilty to rape and attempted murder in September 2009.

Wichita police say Newberry doused his stepdaughter with lighter fluid before setting fire to the family's mobile home in March 2009. His wife and three other children escaped the fire. The stepdaughter survived with burns over 40 percent of her body.

The sentence Newberry received Thursday includes five years on each of four counts of aggravated arson.

If there was ever a case that deserved the death penalty, this is it.

Is it more humane to keep him medicated and confined to a cell for the rest of his life, which will likely be shortened by 20 to 30 years due to confinement and meds, or to give him a lethal injection and let that be the end of it.

He deserves humane treatment? That is sick after what he did to destroy the girls life. Those scars will never heal.

The guy deserves life. but I don't agree the girl has to be described as her life destroyed. She is alive and deserves to be counted as a fighter. Caitlyn Johnson life is not destroyed, to say that is to dismiss her.
