40 years ago: Motorcycle race track approved

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 27, 1972:

Residents had brought their opinions to a recent meeting of the Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission meeting recently. The topics at hand were a rock quarry and a motorcycle race track. Local residents had convinced the commissioners that the proposed rock quarry, to be located about seven miles south of Lawrence, was not in their best interests as it would cause disruption, pollution, noise, and heavy truck traffic. The commissioners eventually had approved, however, the issuance of a conditional use permit for a motorcycle race track on about 80 acres near Big Springs — with several conditions. Only six races could be held each year; races could be held on Sundays or holidays only; and the owner had to provide adequate trash receptacles as well as sanitation and parking facilities.
