Driver accused of being intoxicated, other violations, while taking kids to school

A 24-year-old Lawrence man was arrested Tuesday morning after he was accused of driving two children to school while he was intoxicated, said Sgt. Trent McKinley, a Lawrence police spokesman.

An officer about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday stopped the driver in the 1600 block of University Drive for a stop sign violation. He was driving two children, ages 6 and 8, to school, and upon investigation officers determined the man was intoxicated, McKinley said. He was arrested on charges of child endangerment, DUI, no driver’s license, transporting an open container, no proof of insurance and a stop sign violation.

Douglas County prosecutors had not filed formal charges against the man Tuesday, and he remained in the Douglas County Jail as of Tuesday evening. The Journal-World generally does not identify suspects unless they are formally charged.
