A 24-year-old Lawrence man was arrested Tuesday morning after he was accused of driving two children to school while he was intoxicated, said Sgt. Trent McKinley, a Lawrence police spokesman.

An officer about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday stopped the driver in the 1600 block of University Drive for a stop sign violation. He was driving two children, ages 6 and 8, to school, and upon investigation officers determined the man was intoxicated, McKinley said. He was arrested on charges of child endangerment, DUI, no driver’s license, transporting an open container, no proof of insurance and a stop sign violation.

Douglas County prosecutors had not filed formal charges against the man Tuesday, and he remained in the Douglas County Jail as of Tuesday evening. The Journal-World generally does not identify suspects unless they are formally charged.

I've heard that using mouthwash before taking a breathalyzer can cause a false positive.

And he retains his right to father as many children as he possibly can.

you think they should castrate him? that's a bit harsh.

Perhaps. Yet should the day come when he causes an accident where a couple of children are killed, we'll wonder if it could have been prevented had we castrated him when we had the chance.

Perhaps. Yet should the day come when we learn that he's fathered a dozen children by a dozen different women, and they are all being supported by taxpayers, we'll wonder if this intergenerational poverty could have been prevented had we castrated him when we had the chance.

Perhaps. And now I can speculate a thousand different scenarios with equally troubling consequences. However, with no speculation at all we know he has endangered the lives of children (assuming the facts as presented are true). And while I don't believe that castration fits the crime in this case, perhaps a loss of freedom will prevent one of those troubling possibilities from becoming a reality.

This sort of thing makes me very, very angry. Sure, adults have the right to drink, but they do not have the right to drive drunk, and never to drive defenseless children while drunk!!

Some critical questions are was his the kids' dad? Mom's boyfriend or friend? Did she know her children were being driven to school by a damn drunk, or not?

Pity the children.

He needs to marry the dog celebrity reporter and then breed kids for some education lab experiment.

It amazes me as to how many really stupid people walk this planet and I mean brain-dead stupid people. They hear words, but for some reason their minds have not developed enough to comprehend them. So sad.
