40 years ago: Despite ‘traditional’ rainy weather, Kansas Relays a success
From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 21, 1972:
- Fire of an undetermined origin had caused heavy damage to a study room at the Delta Chi fraternity house, 1245 West Campus. The fire, which had been reported at 1:19 a.m., had damaged an interior wall as well as clothing and furniture in the room.
- An article on this week’s weather referred to the “traditional tantrum” of rain that had proven an obstacle to the Kansas Relay events. However, athletes and spectators today and tomorrow were expected to enjoy clearer, warmer weather with barely a chance of rain. Bill Salome, chair of the Kansas Relays banquet committee, reported that he expected between 250 and 300 people to attend the banquet this evening in the Kansas Union. If his estimates were correct, this would prove to be one of the largest banquets in Relays history up to this time.
