100 years ago: An update on area ‘sporting news’

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 20, 1912:

“SPORTING NEWS! A baseball commission to settle and dispose of the grievances, disputes, and other matters of similar nature incident to the national pastime in Lawrence seems to be the solution of the evil that existed last year when the members of the league themselves were obliged to smooth out all difficulties that arose. This was the gist of the discussion at the meeting held last night when the Twilight Baseball League of Lawrence was re-organized for the season of 1912. It is a suggestion that certainly merits no little consideration and if worked out along the lines suggested should be a great factor in making the coming season a success. All matters regarding contested games, the admission of new players, the reversing of decisions, the changing of rules, naming of officials, and in fact all matters concerning the organization could be disposed of in a fair and satisfactory manner…. Lawrence athletic followers will be pleased to learn that Coach Stiehm of Nebraska is to be athletic manager of the Cornhuskers. Stiehm is a much discussed personage about the Kansas headquarters, although the language is not always of the most complimentary order…. It is figured that about one day’s work will put Learnard Field in shape for the young track men of Lawrence. The circular track is to be even larger than the indoor track in Convention Hall in Kansas City…. The Blues opened with a defeat yesterday, but then that is the regulation way for them to begin the season…. The American and National Leagues opened the season of 1912 on April 11. All of the clubs were reported in good shape and ready for the season’s pennant race.”
