Lawrence police are looking for three suspects after a man was robbed at gunpoint Thursday afternoon after cashing a check near 23rd and Iowa streets.

Sgt. Trent McKinley said the victim he alleged the robbery occurred about 1:45 p.m. after he left Cash ‘n Go, 2540 Iowa. Police were called about 1:50 p.m. by the victim in at a phone in the 2300 block of Iowa Street. The robbery did not occur inside the business.

McKinley said the man was acquainted with the three suspects and got into a vehicle, described as a white Ford Explorer, after he cashed the check. The men then used a handgun to rob the man, and they let him out of the vehicle in the area.

McKinley said police were looking for three black males associated with the vehicle. Initially one suspect was described as being heavy set and wearing a gray shirt, and another suspect was said to be skinnier wearing a plaid shirt.

No injuries were reported. Police did not release the amount of money taken.

“Anyone who had been in that area and seen any of this, we would encourage them to call us and let us know what they saw,” McKinley said.

McKinley said anyone with information could call the department at 785-832-7650 or Douglas County Crime Stoppers at 785-843-TIPS (8477). Callers may remain anonymous.

Why not include the race of the suspects? Maybe they were wearing masks. If so, then mention that. Gender, make/model and color of the car were included, but not their race. Why does it always have to be a white vehicle? Why can't it be black?

That's a switch, usually those check cashing places are robbing their customers.

These check cashing places have to be big targets, I am surprised they have not been robbed more often in this town.

I saw 3 or so cop cars at the check cashing/payday loan place on 6th street a week or so ago.

I think they are trying to make a point that it is not illegal for police to be seen in the parking lot of check cashing businesses and that it is ok for you to say that you saw them there because there will be no penalties. However just in case it is best to do so undercover on the local paper web site

The guys probably at risk for calling it in. Bet it feels horrible to be robbed by someone you know. A lot of crime is done by inner circle. It is why mom worries about who you hang with.

Ottaway - - not really in the same area. A lot closer to the 'Bud than the deal yesterday. Now, that is not to say it couldn't be the same people as they do have a vehicle.

They will be found and they will deny it. Who's to say this guy didn't make the story up. Maybe he owed them, maybe drugs were involved, maybe, maybe, maybe. Who to believe?
