25 years ago: Record-setting warm temps widespread across state

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 19, 1987:

  • Warm southerly winds had caused record high temperatures in parts of Kansas over the recent weekend. All-time highs in the 80s and 90s had been recorded in Goodland, Salina, Wichita, and Newton. Lawrence had not experienced a record with its Saturday high of 86, but it had come close, and a record-setter was expected today. As usual with high springtime temperatures, thunderstorms were lurking not far behind.
  • Storminess of another kind was expected at an upcoming environmental impact hearing in Lawrence. A large crowd was expected, including state and federal highway officials, city commissioners, Lawrence Chamber of Commerce representatives, and local residents. The issues at hand were the environmental, social, and economic concerns about the proposed southern Lawrence trafficway, which was proposed to start at Kansas Highway 10 near Noria Road and run west to Clinton Lake, then turn north along the Corps of Engineers Road to Interstate 70. This route was to go through five existing homes.
