KU student says stranger pushed her to the ground outside Strong Hall

April 18, 2012

Kansas University police are investigating an incident after a student alleged a stranger pushed her to the ground on campus Monday night as she was leaving Strong Hall.

Maj. Chris Keary, assistant KU police chief, said the 19-year-old woman reported a man shoved her about 9:25 p.m. Monday as she was on the southwest side of Strong Hall. She kicked the man, and they both ran away, Keary said.

The woman reported the incident to police 11:15 a.m. Tuesday. She had a mark on her face, Keary said.

She described the suspect as a tall black male in his 40s or 50s with graying black hair. He was wearing a brown jacket.

Keary said police were still investigating the incident and asked anyone with possible information to call police at 785-864-5900 or KU Crime Stoppers at 785-864-8888.

Why did she wait so long to report it? They could have at least searched the area if she reported it immediately.

She probably felt silly calling the police to say "Some guy pushed me. I wasn't hurt. He ran away."

Then, after thinking about it and telling people about it that she realized that it was really was serious enough to report.

This is a traumatic event for the student (and I am soory to hear) but being pushed is hardly news unless this student was rich/famous or if there is more to the story. I bet you that hundreds of people get pushed every day here in good ole L-Town.

Can't wait for the coverage about someone who gave another person the finger. Hey, I hit all 8 lights from 15th and Kentucky up to 9th and Iowa....that is newsworthy

Really, you think it's okay for people to get shoved to the ground? Glad I don't live in your world.

somedude20 6 years, 2 months ago

I did not say that at all what I said is that is not news. Let me know if you need help reading and understanding that (or I can use crayon)

Adrienne Sanders 6 years, 2 months ago

Crime is news b/c even if the event itself wasn't HUGE and DRAMATIC it's a warning to other people. Especially with random crimes like these. Sorry this wasn't exciting enough for you.

Being pushed down IS NOT NEWS unless you are some plateaybilly from Elk Snout Kansas...wait, sorry...have a nice day.

Sorry, I care not to suck anything that you would!

Yes, somedude20, this is Kansas and pushing a woman to the ground is not news. Afterall, Topeka made wife beating legal last October.

Just curious... if a man got shoved by woman... will that be a news? Some might be laughing at the man for being weak... just saying... :)

I am glad your life here in lawrence is so good that all you worry about it who gives you thge finger and how many green light you hit. Those were things i thougth about when i was in high school.Whats your excuse- that you dont see the danger in that behavior except to be selfish which we can tell you are by your posted Smonedude20 how about you grow up and think about other's in this wonderful town so it can stay wonderfully safe.

It's an attempted rape, you spaz. Maybe it's newsworthy for that reason. Maybe it's newsworthy because others need to be warned.

My wife works close to there. I want her to know about this. Now she does know about it.

We may not know for sure if it was an attempted rape. But my guess is that it was. Or perhaps this man was seeing how much he can get away this time as he prepares for a rape next time. It's imperative this be taken seriously as the likelihood of escalation is high. This guy needs to be stopped now.

Liberty275 6 years, 2 months ago

We can't really prove it's attempted rape with what we know, but it doesn't really matter. You are right anyway.

Attempted rape is suggested by the circumstance and it is newsworthy because it warns the public, and our wonderful college girls in particular that they should be careful as they might be next. I figure that's one purpose of the local news, not just hot stories about the TBus or the sacred mudhole.

Her employer should be full of fine men that would escort her to her car if she asks. Tell her to ask.

Now for the question of the day: If she pulled a gun and shot this person would she have been justified in doing so?

motoadventure 6 years, 2 months ago

She would have been raked over the coals for carrying a gun on campus.

Who knows, maybe the national media would catch wind of it and sensationalize it, next thing you know the New Black Panthers have a bounty on her head.....

Glad this was reported. I am frequently near there. Good for her for kicking the guy and ending the attack before anything else happened.

Whew, some cranky people out on the forums today.

Perhaps the cranky folks need to get a popsicle and relax. It's a cool and fruity treat on a spring evening.

This innocent female student was attacked on-campus before 10pm. This should be all that is needed to determine what happened. This a-hole was intent on doing sommthinghigm

Stunerik 6 years, 2 months ago

Get a rope. We'll ride out to find this guy and string him up.

collective82 6 years, 2 months ago

Or maybe this guy was just a rude person in a hurry bumped into her when she wasn't paying attention, she fell kicked out at him for causing her to fall and thats all it was. When was the last rape in this town? Could be nothing more than a rude jerk and not a attempt at rape.
