40 years ago: Edgewood housing development accepting applications

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 17, 1972:

Today was the first official application day for the Edgewood lower-income housing project at 17th and Haskell. Lawrence Housing Authority Director Hugh Dunkum said that he had given application forms to about two dozen people by noon today. Construction on the project was about 85 percent completed, with occupancy expected in July. Meanwhile, the Kansas University chapter of Phi Delta Theta had spent a recent Saturday creating a play structure for future young Edgewood residents. About 55 members of the fraternity had gathered to build the structure, which had been designed by senior architecture student Maaurice Breidenthal. “Before we even finished, there were 10 little children playing on the structure,” said one of the organizers. “We were really satisfied when we saw the children enjoying it.”
