From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 15, 1972:

• An exciting new device was being tested at Kansas University by the U.S. Department of Commerce. The experimental machine, an electronic tornado sensor, was housed in the Space Technology Building on west campus. Meteorologist Joe Eagleman explained that the small device had eight lights which would flash if it detected electrical activity in the atmosphere within a radius of about 15 miles. “I think there is a definite need for some way of predicting tornadoes more accurately and anything that can be developed will be helpful,” Eagleman said.
• Midnight tonight was the deadline for legal use of studded snow tires in Kansas. State officials reminded residents that the deadline would be strictly enforced with no exceptions.
