40 years ago: Future president speaks at Lawrence Chamber dinner

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 14, 1972:

George Herbert Walker Bush, then 47 years old and serving as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, was the featured speaker for tonight’s annual Lawrence Chamber of Commerce banquet. In Kansas City on the previous day, Bush had said that the primary role of the United States was “the alleviation of human suffering and the quest for peace.” He said that the United Nations represented the best chance of a settlement of problems in the Middle East, but later referred to the U.N. as “that crazy, troubled Disneyland on the East River,” a “fishbowl and a rumor mill” beyond compare. Ambassador Bush spoke to a capacity crowd in the Kansas Union Ballroom, where after receiving a “warm and enthusiastic ovation” he opened the floor for questions. In introducing him as featured speaker, Dolph C. Simons Jr., who had arranged for the visit, predicted that the country would be hearing much more about Bush in the coming years.
