25 years ago: School bus company applies for contract renewal

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 14, 1987:

  • The manager of R. W. Harmon and Sons, Inc., the bus company serving the Lawrence school district, had appeared before the board this week to respond to a rash of complaints from area drivers. Renewal of the company’s contract was contingent on a review of its safety procedures. Manager Harold Milligan said that the company had hired a full-time driver trainer this year and had also established mandatory drug testing for its employees.
  • Gov. Mike Hayden today signed into a law a bill banning smoking in all retail stores, restaurants and public buildings, except in specially designated areas. The ban was scheduled to begin on July 1. State law prior to this ban prohibited smoking in elevators, libraries, museums, theaters, doctors’ waiting rooms, and many governmental meeting rooms.
