40 years ago: ‘Dustfall’ spatters cars with mud

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 13, 1972:

  • Many early-morning conversations over coffee today were on the topic of the “dustfall” that had affected vehicles. Owners of autos left outside overnight all over northeast Kansas had arisen to find mud spatters on their cars. A spokesman for the National Weather Service explained that the phenomenon was due to a “very light rain with a heavy concentration of dust particles captured by the falling rain.”
  • Three houses near the intersection of 17th and Massachusetts were torn down today as work began on Babcock Place, a seven-story housing complex for the elderly. The federally-funded project, which was expected to cost $2,077,000 and take about a year to build, was to include 120 living units.
