Early-morning accident sends Lecompton woman, 21, to LMH

A Lecompton woman was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital early Wednesday after a two-vehicle accident in northwestern Douglas County, Undersheriff Steve Hornberger said.

Sheriff’s officers determined 18-year-old Austin Kelley, of Lecompton, fell asleep about 1 a.m. while driving north on County Road 1029 just south of Lecompton. Hornberger said her vehicle went into the west ditch. She woke up as she tried to regain control of the vehicle; it hit a road sign and sideswiped a vehicle headed south.

Kelley and her passenger were not injured. The driver of the southbound vehicle, Lauren Times, 21, of Lecompton, was taken to LMH for precautionary measures, the undersheriff said. Times’ two passengers were not injured. Times was treated and released from LMH, said Belinda Rehmer, a hospital spokeswoman.

There was no evidence she was impaired, but officers cited Kelley for transporting an open container in her vehicle and driving left of the center line, Hornberger said.
