25 years ago: Four-way stop approved for east Lawrence intersection
From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 7, 1987:
Requests from an east Lawrence resident and a parent-teacher association were leading to a decision on a Lawrence intersection. The Kennedy School PTA and resident Charles Murtagh had petitioned the Traffic Safety Commission separately about the intersection of 19th Street and Maple Lane. Murtagh had said that cars on 19th between Harper and Haskell often accelerated to 60 or 70 mph. “It’s a speedway, a demolition derby,” he said, giving examples of damage to parked cars, fences, and lawns. A 10-year-old Kennedy School student had also been seriously injured when he had been struck by a car near the intersection. TSC members agreed that a request for a four-way stop at the intersection should be approved and forwarded to the city commission.
