40 years ago: Local construction slowly increasing
From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 6, 1972:
- According to a recent Associated Press story, Kansas in 1972 produced about 900 billion cubic feet of natural gas per year, which was over 300 billion more than was consumed annually in the state. Officials said that approximately half the gas produced was shipped outside the state to such locations as Denver, Minneapolis, Detroit, and Pittsburgh, Pa. As estimates showed that about 600 million cubic feet per year were used in Kansas, that meant that some 150 billion cubic feet per year were imported from other states, primarily Oklahoma and Texas.
- City building permits showed that Lawrence construction was still on the rise. The numbers for March 1972 not only exceeded those for February, but also showed an increase compared with March of the previous year. The largest permit granted in the previous month had been for $590,000 worth of remodeling and additions to the Lawrence National Bank at Seventh and Massachusetts.
