25 years ago: Record voter turnout expected for tomorrow’s election

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 6, 1987:

  • Heavy voter turnout was expected for the next day, with ballots perhaps reaching a record high for a purely local election. City voters were to choose three city commissioners and four school members, but the unique draw of this election was centered in the three mall questions that had made it onto the ballot this year. Douglas County Clerk Patty Jaimes said she was being cautious, not wanting to guess how many voters would turn out, but she was expecting more than usual. So far the record turnout for a spring city election had been in 1981, when 37 percent of registered voters had gone to the polls.
  • Low-income residents of Douglas County had received $234,059 in assistance to help pay their heating bills this winter. The state’s Low Income Energy Assistance Program, or LIEAP, had provided $191,237 to 970 county households, while the local Warm Hearts program had provided $42,822 in allocations.
