Aquahawks openings: The Lawrence Aquahawks swimming team is always accepting new members. The Aquahawks are a year-round USA Swimming-sponsored competitive swim team. The Aquahawks offer a swim lesson program and competitive swim team for all ages. The Aquahawks are coached by professional coaches with weekly practices geared toward a variety of skill levels. Indoor facility: An indoor baseball/softball practice facility is available in Big Springs, with five full-size batting cages, three pitching tunnels and an 70-by-70-foot open area that can be expanded to 140-by-70. For information, visit or call 785-887-6700.

FUNdamental Softball: Learn the proper mechanics and techniques to playing softball. Emphasis placed on fundamental instruction teaching the aspects of pitching, catching, fielding, base-running and hitting. Coach and team consulting available, too. Softball registration: Lawrence Girls Fast Pitch Softball Registration has been extended to April 12 for all age groups — 8U, 10U, 12U, 14U and 16U. The 8U Division-Machine Pitch teams will be formed by individual registrations from schools and grades. 8U players must be 8 years of age or younger on Jan. 1, 2012. Cost is $65 per child. The 10U, 12U, 14U and 16U divisions will be Team Registrations. Fee: $900 per team. Player’s eligibility is determined by age as of Jan. 1, 2012. No more than 8 teams in each division. KU soccer camps: Kansas University will hold several youth soccer camps this summer. A Weekicks Camp for boys and girls in grades K-5 will run 9-11:30 a.m. June 11-15. A Day Camp for boys and girls grades 5-8 will run 9 a.m.-4 p.m. June 11-15. Girls Residential and Team Camps run July 13-16 and July 17-20 for girls in grades 4-12. And a Boys Elite Residential Camp runs Joly 17-20 for boys in grades 6-12. For information, visit

Youth baseball, softball: Registration deadline for the 2012 Lawrence Parks and Recreation Youth baseball/softball program (K through 6) is April 12. Fred Roll Workout: The Fred Roll Workout is scheduled at Jayhawk Tennis Facility, 5200 Clinton Parkway, a beginning weight/fitness class offered by the former strength and conditioning coach for 22 Jayhawks sports. Class begins March 27 and registration at 5:15 and meets 5:30-7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays with an optional class at 11 a.m. on Saturdays. This is a basic class for 7-12 grades, boys and girls groups and adults accepted. Class size is limited to 15. Expect gains in core strength, overall strength, flexibility, balance, vertical jump, acceleration, speed, change direction. Contact Fred at 785-331-8200.

World Team Tennis: The 2012 Spring World Team Tennis Leagues begin April 29 for the 3.5 division and May 1 for the 4.0 division. Online registration is required at WTT. Free State High football meeting: Prospective Free State football players and their parents are invited to attend a team meeting at 7 p.m. April 9 at the FSHS auditorium.

Youth football camp: The Lawrence/Free State youth football camp will be Monday, June 25 through Wednesday, June 27 at Lawrence High School. The camp is for children in third through eighth grades. Girls basketball 3-on-3 league: Lawrence High girls basketball coach Nick Wood and Free State coach Bryan Duncan will offer a 3-on-3 basketball league this fall for girls enrolled in grades 4-8. The league will be split up into a fourth-sixth-grade division and a seventh-/eighth-grade division. Each team will play four, 10-minute games a night. The league will run Sunday nights from 7:15-8:30 on April 15, 22 and 29 and May 6, 13. Games will be played at Free State High. Running clinic: Good Form Running Clinics at Garry Gribble’s Running Sports (839 Mass. Street) will be 6-7 p.m. April 10 and 24. This is a free clinic for anyone who wants to learn tips and techniques to improve running efficiency. Shoreline Shuffle: The Lawrence Trail Hawks will host the fourth annual “Shoreline Shuffle 5K Trail Run” on May 5 on Clinton Lake’s North Shore Trails. The Shoreline Shuffle begins and ends at the southwest corner of Campground One, in Clinton Lake State Park. The marked course includes difficult rocky, root-bound trails; smooth, flat, easy trails, scenic lake views; and long shady stretches through old-growth forest. The race begins at 8 a.m., with race-day registration and check-in starting at 7 a.m. The race entry form and on-line registration are both available at

Soccer tryouts: K.C. Core West Soccer Club will hold tryouts this spring for boys and girls teams (U7 to U14/15), fall 2012 high school girls and spring 2013 high school boys. Volleyball clinic: Lawrence Parks and Rec will hold a volleyball clinic for girls in fourth through eighth grades on April 21 and 28 and May 5 at the East Lawrence Recreation Center, 1245 East 15th Street. The clinic will run 9-10:45 a.m. for fourth-sixth grades and 11 a.m.-1 p.m. for sixth-through eighth. Cost is $50 per girl and includes a T-shirt. Pre-registration is required. Deadline is April 16.
