Franklin County man convicted in pair of Lawrence robberies

A Douglas County jury Tuesday convicted a 23-year-old Franklin County man in connection with two robberies in Lawrence that occurred last year.

Jurors deliberated for 75 minutes and found Mikael Englund, of Richmond, guilty of two counts of aggravated robbery and one count of aggravated burglary. He was acquitted of aggravated battery and aggravated intimidation of a victim in connection with the March 2011 robbery.

Prosecutors also accused Englund of participating in a January 2011 armed robbery of Austin Longhurst, taking marijuana, money and electronics at an apartment in the 800 block of Hilltop Drive.

Lawrence police Detective M.T. Brown testified Tuesday that Englund in an interview confessed the robberies were part of a scheme to get money. Longhurst also identified Englund as one of the men who robbed him.

Three other co-defendants have entered pleas and been convicted in connection to the robberies.

District Judge Paula Martin is scheduled to sentence Englund on May 10.
