City seeks ideas for skate park

April 4, 2012

Leaders with the Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department are looking for feedback on proposed improvements to the city skate park in Centennial Park.

City officials will host a meeting at 6 p.m. Friday at the Carnegie Building, 200 W. Ninth St., to hear ideas about how the city can improve the city-operated skate park.

The skate park, located at 600 Rockledge Road, has deteriorated since it was built in 1998. City officials recently have hired a Maine-based design firm to come up with about $125,000 worth of improvements to the facility.

Once a design is settled upon, work is expected to begin later this year.

Consumer1 doesn't appear to know much of the skating ethos. Having an attendant and charging to use the skate park would discourage kids from using it, especially underprivileged ones. The idea of this park is to give ALL kids in Lawrence a great location to exercise and be outside! I looked at the project pictures from the WhoSkates website and am really impressed with what the city is considering for this upgrade. Gone are the days of putting a few steel ramps on a concrete slab. Instead they are talking about building a genuine skate park with concrete bowls and ramps and lots of rails! Something this town should have done years ago. My best skateboarding days may be over but I still like to get out my old Tony Hawk and cruise around the skate park every once in a while, and this upgrade will definitely get me over there again, and again, and again!

Just so you know, it costs less to skateboard than to engage in any other sport, plus it builds independence and confidence. Both of those qualities you seem to want to crap on, i guess we need more team sports players that follow the herd eh?

Reality? Oh, I know it well. When I was a small kid I started skateboarding on a cheap plastic skateboard and when I was a skate punk in high school I saved up my OWN money to buy my decks, wheels, rails, pads, etc, and I still have the last skateboard I put together 25 years later! You don't need $40 shirts, $150 skater shoes, etc. to skate! Clearly you are out of your element in this discussion. And many others. If you had clearly read the article you would know that the city has budgeted $125,000 to design AND build the skatepark. And as a series of concrete bowls and ramps the upkeep will be minimal. Perhaps you are the one who needs to get a grip on reality?!?

I feel exactly the same about the bicycle paths, public transportation and all the other things that are paid for mostly by those who put into the system and used by those who don't.

You both are very clever, i think we should keep kids in a cage until they are 18 too.

Oh and where were your comments when A LOT of money was being spent for new football stadiums etc??? Those kids should be paying for it too right!!

and just so you know, my son skateboards at that park (keeps him very busy) the last t-shirts i bought him were $15, the last pair of shoes i bought him were $35 with free shipping (Zappos!) and his board he cobbled together from parts and money from doing odd jobs for elderly neighbors. But please, continue making total asses of yourselves.

Oh and move away already, god forbid you would need any SOCIAL services when you get old (as out of touch as you sound, im guessing you are about ready for your MEDICARE paid for MEDS)

good day

Oh and where were your comments when A LOT of money was being spent for new football stadiums etc??? Those kids should be paying for it too right!! +++++++++++ I fully agree... we have what 4 football stadiums in this town, all of which are used what...8 weeks out of the year. Yep.. would much rather see a skate park.

the last pair of shoes i bought him were $35 with free shipping (Zappos!) ++++++ Thanks for supporting the tax base, as I stated... those who demand the most from the system are usually the ones that put the least into it. +++++++++++++ As for social services, I have worked hard all my life, avoided substance abuse, saved my money and did without so I won't have to mooch off of the younger generation when I am beating oatmeal to death with my gums... can you say the same?

good day.

By the way, Centennial Park is a city park which includes a playground & swing set, a disc golf course, a skate park, walking trails, and a gazebo with picnic tables. When is the last time you even set foot in Centennial Park?

Cant_have_it_both_ways 6 years ago

I drive by it almost every day. Seldom do I see anyone there except a few that are walking their dogs so they have somewhere to crap. Oh... I also see a hand full of disc golf players once and a while and then the few enjoying Biggs BBQ on the West side. Other than that the park stays shoulder to shoulder. Now, I would feel much better if we made the prisoners cut the grass instead of city employees and a coin machine to turn on the lights at night. But then again, I tend to be one of the 50% that pays income taxes. It is a very nice park. To bad it is under utilized.

If we don't give these teens and young adults an activity where they can channel their energy, they will undoubtedly find some other activity. Do we want them going to a skateboard park or do we want them wandering the streets, looking for something to do?

I can tell you that I've been to the park in Kokomo and there were many more than 15-30 kids there on the two days that I visited the park. The park in Arvada is fairly new and I haven't visited it yet. I can tell you that several of my friends who live in Colorado have been there and it is used quite heavily, much like the Boulder Skate Park and the new park in Longmont. Oh, btw, it isn't just teens that use these parks. I'm a 48 year-old accountant that likes to skate. My friends in CO are the same age as I am. One works as an administrator and teacher at the Y out there and the other is a physical therapist (he comes in real handy on some skating days) so it isn't just a kid thing.

Keep it up Lawrence! We need more outdoor parks and recreational activities such as skate parks, bike parks, disc golf courses, walking trails, bike trails, playgrounds, dog parks, etc. Love to see that the city supports outdoor recreational activities! Next, how about a new bike park similar to Boulder's Valmont Bike Park for all the cycling enthusiasts in this town!

Anyone have a clue as to what is happening with the basketball courts at Deerfield Elementary…

Lawrence Parks & Rec is seeking public input as to what should be included when they rebuild Deerfield Park. They held a meeting last night at Deerfield Elementary to get ideas from the community.

They should level the skate park or make the kids pay for the improvements

While they're at it, make Fritzel pay the $13 million for his new tournament building.

And put a toll booth on every sidewalk. And every road. Yes, Yes, let's make every individual pay for everything they consume, pay for every service they use. Yes, I'm sure that's the thing to do, 1029.

My kids are 9 and 10. They have a great time with their cheap skateboards, bikes, and even their remote control cars at the skate park. The teens I have seen there meet up after school, and before and after work. They are respectful of my kids and other little kids playing there. They watch out for each other, and seem to have a very low tolerance for anything that might give the park a bad name or have it closed down. They have earned the faith and trust of the people of this town. Upgrades are appropriate at this time and I plan to go to this meeting to voice my opinion.
