25 years ago: Opening night fizzles for locally-produced movie

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 3, 1987:

Film director Chuck Martinez and screenwriter Paul Harris were featured in a front-page photo with the Granada movie theater marquee above them reading “WORLD PREMIERE — NICE GIRLS DON’T EXPLODE — with Barbara Harris.” A stretch limo had brought the movie’s star and producers to the front of the theater, with Martinez and screenwriter Harris arriving by fire engine; however, the movie’s premiere extravaganza fell flat when the theater’s projection system failed. When it became apparent that the problem was not going to be repaired that night, New World Pictures executives comforted the nearly 700 attendees with an invitation to the reception at the Alvamar Country Club, “where the bar was open and the hors d’oeuvres plentiful.” Frustrated moviegoers were to be allowed to use their tickets for later screenings of the film.
