There was a single-vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 40 Saturday night, five miles east of the Douglas/Shawnee County line.

The driver, Josiah Benton, struck a tree while traveling eastbound about 10:24 p.m. after he crossed the center line and overcompensated.

Benton was transported to Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center in Topeka by air ambulance. Lewis said Benton’s 1996 Dodge pickup was registered in Hartford, Mo., but it is believed he may reside in Lecompton. An update on Benton’s condition was unavailable Sunday.
