40 years ago: New cable TV tower struck by lightning

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 2, 1972:

  • Sunflower Cablevision had been knocked out on a recent afternoon by a lightning bolt which had struck its 200-foot tower, but the locally originated stations, 6 and 10, had not gone off the air. Subscribers had had to go without channel 7 (Kansas City’s 19) and channel 8 (Topeka’s 27) until those services were restored at 4 p.m. today. General Manager Max Falkenstien said that staff was still trying to assess damage to the tower.
  • Recent weather conditions had produced the interesting phenomenon pictured on the front page — a giant snow-rabbit. Matt Clinton, 2, and Laura McKnight, 3, had constructed the bunny with assistance from their mothers. This Easter Bunny was a bit chillier than most, but he was smiling and holding a nice batch of Easter eggs.
  • The Red Dog Theater, 642 Mass., had been rented to private promoters for a concert this weekend by Stan Kenton and his orchestra.
