25 years ago: Movie studio planned for Lawrence

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 2, 1987:

  • Lawrence city commissioners this week gave their unanimous approval to a resolution of intent to issue $3.5 million in industrial revenue bonds for construction of a movie studio in the University and Corporate Research Park. Oread Studios, the 28,000-square-foot complex planned for a 7.71-acre tract on the city’s western edge, was to include 16,000 square feet of sound stage space as well as dressing rooms, offices, and classrooms.
  • A recent report from a Lawrence Chamber of Commerce task force said that there was no question of whether Lawrence would have a mall, but where and when. The report was based on visits to mall projects in Manhattan and Hutchinson as well as Wausau, Wisconsin, and its writers stressed that a downtown mall would be better for Lawrence than a suburban one.
