25 years ago: Fall rains close to setting record

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 30, 1986:

  • The month just ending was shaping up to be the second-soggiest September on record in Lawrence. The Kansas University weather service had recorded the monthly total at 12.29 inches, compared to a record 12.85 inches in 1973. Clouds were expected to be threatening today, but no additional rain was expected to fall, so the 1973 record was not expected to be broken.
  • The Lawrence Housing Authority was fielding complaints from residents at Babcock Place. The recent heavy rains had caused water to seep through the walls of the low-income housing project at 1700 Massachusetts. One resident, Norma Osborne, told the authority that a foot of water had accumulated in one of her closets. Marilyn Yarbrough, head of the LHA Board of Commissioners, said that $32,000 worth of emergency repairs were needed at the location, and that another $8,000 to $10,000 was needed to fix water problems at other LHA buildings.
