40 years ago: Surprise melon patch grows on patio

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 28, 1971:

In a front-page photo, a crowd of toddlers and preschoolers were gathered around a fine 28-pound watermelon which they had unintentionally planted. The five grandchildren of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Nicolay, 711 Belle Meade, had been enjoying a watermelon on the backyard patio earlier in the summer. The watermelon feed had of course included the traditional spitting of seeds in every direction. The unexpected result was that some of the seeds had fallen into a crack and had begun to grow, resulting in a patch overtaking most of the patio. The two good-sized watermelons that resulted were going to be eaten by the Nicolays and their grandchildren before the first frost.
