40 years ago: Groundbreaking ceremony for new KU building

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 26, 1971:

  • Groundbreaking ceremonies had taken place for the new Raymond C. Moore Hall, which was to house the State Geological Survey, on Kansas University’s west campus. The $1,300,000 structure was expected to be completed by fall 1972. The honored guest at the groudnbreaking was Dr. Moore, emeritus Summerfield Distinguished Professor of Geology, who had been state geologist and director of the survey for 38 years as well as teacher and chairman of the department of geology at KU until 1962.
  • Downtown Lawrence merchants were tired but happy the morning after a “Moonlight Madness” sale had drawn large crowds from 7 to 10 p.m. Weaver’s department store, Duckwall’s and Penney’s, at 945 and 830 Massachusetts Street respectively, agreed that the sale had gone very well.
