A Fort Leavenworth soldier pleaded guilty Friday to attempted aggravated battery in connection with a December fight in downtown Lawrence in which a 20-year-old Kansas City, Kan., man was stabbed.

Christopher J. McCallum entered the plea Friday morning after Douglas County prosecutors amended an aggravated battery charge he initially faced to the attempted count.

Assistant district attorney Michael Allen said in court that prosecutors had evidence police were called to a fight around 1 a.m. Dec. 5 near Seventh and Massachusetts streets and investigators discovered that McCallum had a knife and attacked the man. But Allen said McCallum failed in committing “great bodily harm or disfigurement” against the victim. Police have said the victim suffered injuries that were not life threatening.

District Judge Sally Pokorny told McCallum Friday morning he could face anywhere from 17 months to nearly four years in prison but that it was possible he could qualify for probation if he does not have a significant criminal history. Pokorny is scheduled to sentence McCallum Oct. 27.
