40 years ago: Enrollment decreases in USD 497
From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 18, 1971:
- Area retailers, in cooperation with the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce, were gearing up to hold annual Moonlight Madness sale. Bob Zimmerman, chairman of the Chamber’s Retail Trade Area Development committee, encouraged all Lawrence merchants to join in the promotion.
- The official 1971-1972 enrollment in the Lawrence school district was 7,897 students. The figure marked what the district called a “huge decrease” of 151 students from the previous year. This marked the fourth straight year that enrollment in Lawrence schools had declined.
- A group calling itself “The Rainbow Underground” was claiming responsibility for having broken windows at five area businesses. A similar incident had occurred on July 1, when vandalism had occurred at 10 locations.
