Two people transported after injury accident near McDonald’s on 23rd Street

September 17, 2011

Two people were transported to a local hospital Saturday afternoon after a two-car accident in the 900 block of 23rd Street, near the McDonald's restaurant, said Lawrence Police Sgt. Trent McKinley.

Just before 3 p.m. Saturday, a blue Geo Metro rear-ended a stopped black Ford Explorer on 23rd Street as both were heading east on the roadway.

The driver of the Ford Explorer complained of back pain, and was transported by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, McKinley said. A 6-year-old girl in the front seat of the Geo Metro received minor facial injuries after an airbag deployment, and was also transported by ambulance, he said.

The other people involved in the accident were not seriously hurt, he said.

I'm guessing this is another case of a driver following too close behind the vehicle in front of it.

What was a six year old doing in the front seat of a car? Especially a Geo Metro! That's like having a kid in the front seat of a VW Bug! I wouldn't let my kids ride in the front seat with an airbag until they were 12 or 13. That's like asking for a broken neck. These people were very lucky.

Wonder if they were in a booster seat as required by law? Bet not.

Stupid people! Almost as stupid as the two women i saw Thursday morning driving down 23rd street in a ford ranger regular cab with two children in cab with them. no seat belts, no car seats and one was on the lap of the passenger.

These people were truly lucky all the six year old got was facial lacerations. Booster seats and back seat for kids. Please Please PLEASE!

My god, in a Geo Metro you have to allow a LOT of space around you ... I cannot even imagine driving one on 23rd or Iowa, and especially not with a child in the front seat. Was this their first trip to Lawrence?
