25 years ago: Group takes tour to research shopping malls

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 17, 1986:

  • A fact-finding trip sponsored by the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce was due to leave Lawrence this week to meet with mall developers, city officials, and business owners in Hutchinson and Manhattan. The group was seeking information on the potential economic impact of a proposed downtown Lawrence shopping mall. Members hoped to learn from the other cities’ experiences with mall projects. More than 32 people, including chamber members, city officials, and concerned business owners and residents, were taking the tour.
  • U.S. Sen. Bob Dole, R-Kan., was considering taking action to add a $10 million amendment onto a Senate highway spending bill for the proposed Lawrence bypass. The House had already passed a version of the bill that included the $10 million, more than half of the $18 million needed to build the first two lanes of the proposed four-land, 14.3-mile project.
