From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 16, 1986:

A group seeking to save the Union Pacific Depot in North Lawrence from demolition had recently elected a 16-member board of advisers to help raise $500,000. The “Save the Depot Task Force” was to begin fund-raising within the next 30 days, according to Craig Patterson, who was heading up the new group. The project called for cutting the 98-year-old depot in half and wheeling it across the Kansas River bridge to a new location on the south bank of the river. Union Pacific originally planned to raze the depot, saying that the railroad did not want to maintain it any longer. A coalition of Lawrence Preservation Alliance members and the Kansas University rowing crew had then proposed moving the building across the river to a new location, where it could serve as a headquarters for the crew team and a weight-training facility, as well as providing public space for meetings.
