40 years ago: Marijuana operation results in arrests

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 15, 1971:

  • Two 18-year-old men had been arrested for their alleged involvement in a marijuana harvesting operation in Douglas County. Each had posted $1,500 bond on charges of illegal possession of marijuana with the intent to sell it. On July 16, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department had arrested two 19-year-olds at an abandoned farmhouse near the southeast Lawrence city limits, where officials confiscated an estimated 600 pounds of marijuana.
  • A photograph showed workers putting the finishing touches on a new storefront for Weavers Department Store. The upper floors on Ninth Street and Massachusetts Street sides of the building had received facelifts. Larry Flannery, Weavers president, said that the project was undertaken to make the store “modern and up to date” as well as to help in efforts to improve the downtown area.
