Accident investigation continues

A 51-year-old Lawrence man who crashed his vehicle into the porch of a Sixth Street house the evening of Sept. 1 told police that he didn’t recall what happened and that he hoped he hadn’t hurt anyone.

The driver, Charles R. Sowell, was the only person injured after his eastbound 1999 Toyota pickup truck drifted across two lanes of traffic and struck a tree and then the porch of a house in the 400 block of West Sixth Street. A doctor at Lawrence Memorial Hospital told police that Sowell’s injuries were not serious and that he suffered a cut to his head.

According to the report, police are investigating alcohol as a contributing factor to the accident based on observations from officers. One witness reported smelling alcohol inside the vehicle and hearing someone else asking Sowell how much he’d had to drink when Sowell replied: “Just a few,” according to the report. However, the report on Monday did not list Sowell’s blood-alcohol content as test results are still pending.
