25 years ago: Lawrence ranks high on national list

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 13, 1986:

  • According to a recent ranking by the Wall Street Journal, Lawrence was, not surprisingly, a good place to find young adults. The publication had ranked the nation’s metropolitan areas (generally places exceeding 50,000 in population) by the percentage of 18- to 24-year-olds. Moderately-sized college towns were high on the list, with Lawrence placing just after Bryan-College Station, Tex., and Jacksonville, N.C.
  • The stock market was steadying after the “worse one-day drubbing in history” the day before, when the Dow had plunged a record 86.81 points. Reactions in Lawrence were fairly calm, according to local investment brokers.
  • An advertisement for a local business offered “Facsimile Service,” explaining that this made it possible to “transfer any kind of document over the telephone.” The first page could be sent for $3.50 (or received for $2.50), with additional pages at a dollar each.
