40 years ago: St. John School makes curriculum changes

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 11, 1971:

  • The curriculum at St. John’s school was undergoing some changes for the new school year. Each teacher was to specialize in one or two subject areas, an independent study period was being added to each child’s daily schedule, and a new physical education program was being adapted from one observed in England. The school was also moving away from traditional grade levels and toward more individualized teaching. “Certain children are in one book, others are in another. They’re not all doing the same thing at the same time,” explained principal Sister Mary Ann.
  • Members of the Kansas University marching band were pictured on the front page as they held their daily practice. The band was preparing for the upcoming home opening football game against Washington State. New director of bands Bob Foster promised some new variations in the band’s pregame and halftime routines.
