— U.S. officials said Thursday they were investigating a credible but unconfirmed threat that al-Qaida was planning to use a car bomb to target bridges or tunnels in New York City or Washington to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, the first tip of an "active plot" around that date.

The Homeland Security Department said the threat is credible and specific, but unconfirmed. The nation's terror alert level has not changed, but raising it was under consideration Thursday night.

Law enforcement officials were investigating three people who recently entered the U.S. The threat was received by the U.S. intelligence community late Wednesday night, officials said.

"There is specific, credible but unconfirmed threat information," said Janice Fedarcyk, the assistant director in charge of the FBI's New York division. "As we always do before important dates like the anniversary of 9/11, we will undoubtedly get more reporting in the coming days."

Security has been enhanced around the country in the weeks leading up to the 10th anniversary. Law enforcement officials have been wary, particularly after information gleaned from Osama bin Laden's compound in May indicated that al-Qaida had considered attacking the U.S. on the anniversary and other important dates.

The threat came in a single piece of information and was so specific — and came at such a time of already heightened alert — that it could not be ignored. The officials described the threat to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive security matters.

ABC News had initially reported that trucks missing from Kansas City, Mo., were possibly related to the threat, but have since withdrawn that statement after the trucks were found. CBS News reports that there are two distinct threats being investigated right now.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg told reporters that police there were deploying additional resources around the city, but that New Yorkers should go about their business as usual. The city's observance of the attacks will go on as planned, Bloomberg said.

The FBI and Homeland Security Department issued a joint intelligence bulletin Thursday night to law enforcement around the country urging them to maintain enhanced security and be on the lookout for suspicious activity.

Some District of Columbia police officers received an internal memo from department management on Thursday saying that the city had received "credible threats" and that additional staffing would be required, according to a law enforcement source who had seen the memo. Police in both cities were increasing their already beefed-up staffing levels in light of the recent intelligence.

President Barack Obama was briefed on the threat information Thursday morning and directed the counterterrorism community to redouble its efforts in response to the information, a White House official said.

White House officials said there were no plans to change Obama's travel schedule on Sunday in light of the threat. The president is scheduled to mark the 9/11 anniversary with stops at New York's ground zero, the Pentagon and Shanksville, Pa. He will also deliver remarks Sunday night at a memorial concert at the Kennedy Center in Washington.

Law enforcement officials are checking out all of the details included in the threat, said Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y.

"No need to panic," King said. "They have not been able to confirm it yet."

Thursday morning, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano told reporters that there was "a lot of chatter" around the anniversary of the attacks but that there was no information about a specific threat. staff contributed to this report.

They ignored the threats and intelligence pointing to the 9/11 attacks. I guess that was because certain a-holes in government and industry wanted it to happen. Nothing like a war to get the economy moving. Be very afraid.

Glad to know you find forensic science and fact so funny. Dumb is more than just a name.

You are living up to your name Crazy.

Read the 911 commission report. It is free to download and lays out the whole story.

It is easy to connect the dots after the fact, but the fact is that if anyone had been certain the attack was coming, they would have worked to stop it.

The Bush administration was blind, yes, but not willfully blind.

You obviously haven't been paying attention to anything I've posted or you'd understand that there are thousands of people, credible people, who're questioning the 911 Commission Report you cite. These credible professionals are calling for a new investigation into what actually happened that day. The 9/11 Commission was orchestrated from the beginning. As a matter of fact, several on the commission resigned in disgust, i.e. Max Cleland, Lee Hamilton and Thomas Kean.

The 9/11 Commission was "set up to fail" 911 Commissioner Bob Kerrey claims 911 was a 30 year conspiracy.

One would have to take a nap, eat a full meal and visit the bathroom if they wanted to pay attention to anything you've posted here. Less is more...

Well then, you should turn off the television, visit the outhouse, grab a cup of coffee and start educating yourself. Nobody said it would be easy. It's only the biggest crime ever witnessed by our country--nothing very important really.

Question: Why did the secret service, who's only purpose is to protect the life of the president, allow the president to sit in a public classroom after it was clear that the country was under attack? Did they know he was not a target?

8:48 a.m. on the morning of September 11, 2001, the first pictures of the burning World Trade Center were broadcast on live television. The news anchors, reporters, and viewers had little idea what had happened in lower Manhattan, but there were some people who did know. By that time, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), the National Military Command Center, the Pentagon, the White House, the Secret Service, and Canada’s Strategic Command all knew that three commercial airplanes had been hijacked. They knew that one plane had been flown deliberately into the World Trade Center’s North Tower; a second plane was wildly off course and also heading toward Manhattan; and a third plane had abruptly turned around over Ohio and was flying back toward Washington, DC. So why, at 9:03 a.m.—fifteen minutes after it was clear the United States was under terrorist attack—did President Bush sit down with a classroom of second-graders and begin a 20-minute pre-planned photo op?

The same reason evidence of a credible threat prior to 9/11 was essentially ignored: our country was being run by a bunch of incompetent idiots.

Crazy_Larry 6 years, 4 months ago

The lazy answer....Incompetent idiots, eh? Yeah, that's exactly what you should think. The government can do nothing right. But, they flew people to the moon and back...invade countries fairly well too. The Manhattan Project, directed by the Army Corps of Engineers and employing over one hundred thousand people, was kept top secret for four years. Can't do anything right, indeed. They're doing it sooo right, it's wrong.

6 o'clock news on 9 thought they recovered 9 missing trucks. Said they were trying to use for scrap metal. Maybe more missing?

Jonathan Kealing 6 years, 4 months ago

ABC News had backtracked and said the trucks are not connected. Sounds like some right hand and left hand not talking.

Since 9/11, the government has done a solid job of keeping terrorist out. The best Al-Qaeda can do is convert stupid US kids to doing something small that end up getting caught before. The one exception is the Ft. Hood shooting.

ljwhirled 6 years, 4 months ago

Exactly, however, the Gov't has also spend billions on boondoggles that haven't improved security.

Lets get rid of the billions in boondoggles and keep working the intel side of the house, where we are winning the war on domestic terror.

sigh...Everyone, don't forget to be very very afraid, all the freaking time. For a fearful public is the only way to get us to willingly give away our freedom.

It's only been 10 minutes and you people are being reasonable! Stop it and freak out!!! Go buy consumer goods that you don't need. Cover your house in plastic and duct tape! Report anyone who has a tan! Report yourself! You might be a terrorist! If you're not with us, you're against us!

In all seriousness, I hope this doesn't ruin my 9/11 party. NEVAR FORGET.......................that football starts this Sunday!
