When Tiffany Classen began buying bibs for her newborn son nearly two years ago, she quickly realized the pickings were slim.

“It’s hard to find cute things for a boy,” she said. “They get the short end of the stick.”

So, Classen, of Lawrence, started to make what she couldn’t buy. She started making bibs for her son, and when he had enough, she started making them for her friends’ baby showers. They really liked the bibs, which feature retro patterns, dinosaurs and baseballs, and they encouraged her to sell them.

The idea resonated with her, and she started an online store, “Lady With a Baby.” This Sunday, she’ll be one of the 160 vendors offering handmade goods to Lawrence residents during the 32nd annual Fall Arts and Crafts Festival. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at South Park. In addition to the craft sale, local bands will perform throughout the day. There will also be pony rides, a moonwalk and a craft booth for children.

Classen sells other items, including aprons, handbags and pillows handmade out of stylish fabrics. She said she has always made items for herself and is excited to bring something unique to her first festival.

Another exhibitor, Karon Hornberger, of Lawrence, will be selling bracelets and earrings this weekend. What began as a gift for her stepdaughter has turned into a passion. She said she enjoys the feeling of creating something on her own.

“You never make a profit in this business,” Hornberger said. “It’s about the accomplishment; it’s just amazing.”
