From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 7, 1986:
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation announced that it had made an error in crime statistics released the previous week. The KBI had reported that violent crime had shown a 50 percent jump during the first six months of 1986. A new revised report showed that violent crime had increased just 3.5 percent over the same period of 1985. The total crime rate was up 12.3 percent, as opposed to the 16.2 percent overall rate in the original report. In a news release, KBI officials said that a "system error" ha allowed a misdemeanor -- simple battery -- to be incorrectly included in a felony category. Even with the lower numbers, Major Ron Olin of the Lawrence police department hastened to assure the public that "Lawrence is a safe place to live. We are not having an epidemic of crime here. It is very much what it has always been."
