From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 6, 1971:
- Two shoplifters were spotted rolling a cart filled with groceries directly from the store into a "van-type vehicle" in the middle of a recent Thursday afternoon. Employees of the 23rd Street store saw the incident, but not in time to stop the two "Hippie-types" responsible.
- "Rain Really May Fall Here Today," announced a front-page headline. "This time it could be the real thing!" A good chance of rainfall was making an appearance in the forecast for the first time in three weeks.
- A friendly-looking dog, "who has become something of a fixture at Pinckney elementary," was pictured sitting in front of the school. Being lonely while waiting for his favorite playmate to emerge from the halls of learning was not the only problem looming on the pooch's horizon, however. According to the local leash law, dogs within the city limits were to be kept under control at all times and were not permitted to roam. This happy-looking pet had apparently managed to evade the authorities so far.
