40 years ago: KU students paying as much as $50 for semester’s books

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 5, 1971:

An article described the rising costs of textbooks (and the accompanying outrage of Kansas University students) as the new semester got underway. Scholars of “Western Civ I” were asked to shell out $9.70 for a packet of paperbacks ($15.95 for Western Civ II), while other students were shocked to be paying $13.95 for an art history book or $21 for an anatomy text. “Of course, not all texts are that expensive,” the article pointed out, “but numerous students spend as much as $50 or more (law students may spend $100 or more for their books).” An anonymous spokesman from a textbook publishing company queried, “Are the professors overselling kids on books? If less than one-third of a book is assigned, I think it’s unfair to make them buy it.”
